Description: Journeyman bladesmith Mardi Meshejian of Santa Fe, New Mexico is best known for his highly original art knives. He started his career as a jeweler after earning his A.A.S. at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He quickly made the switch to knifemaking in 1995, after attending the ABS School in Arkansas. Mardi's knives are sculptural with a focus on color and contrast. He mixes cultural influences as often as he mixes materials. His work has an ancient yet futuristic feel and always pushes the boundaries of knifemaking. He is one of the true innovators of both material exploration and design. This Japanese-influenced Wakizashi shows his work at its best!
The 18-1/2 inch upswept blade is forged from Mardi's own damascus combining 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The damascus pattern is high contrast and extremely engaging. Mardi's touchmark is on the left side of the blade. Because the blade is forged from carbon steels, we recommend using camellia oil to protect the blade and natural wood handle.
The handle is bloodwood, well known for its bright red color. The bloodwood handle was wrapped in silk using a traditional Japanese wrap, known as tsuka ito, to provide a comfortable grip. A copper menuki is tightly wrapped under the silk. The tsuba guard combines blackened diamond plate and copper. A scarlet red copper habaki finishes the handle.
A saya (sheath) combining bloodwood and carbon fiber is included to protect the sword during transportation. Additionally, Mardi also made a custom sword stand from bloodwood, allowing a dramatic display of the sword and saya in style. Additionally a zipper case and a traditional silk storage bag is included as well.
Excellent work throughout!
