Description: Gene Martin of Williams, Oregon made his first knife back in 1990. He was immediately bit by the knifemaking bug. His mentors include some greats in the industry including Bob Engnath, Jim Ferguson, Bill Herndon, Wayne Goddard, Steve Schwarzer, and Ralph Freer. After retiring as a game warden, Gene spent 6 weeks at the ABS school in Arkansas. Wayne Goddard taught him damascus making and folder making while Bob Engnath taught him how to scrimshaw. He takes the culmination of skills and creates American-made knives designed for use. This knife was designed by Gene's 14 year old granddaughter Paige, so when Gene makes this model, he call's it Paige's Knife.
The blade is D2 semi-stainless steel with a hand rubbed satin finish. D2 is known for its ability to hold an exceptional edge while requiring just a little bit of additional care -- to prevent rusting, it is important to dry the blade after use. The blade combines a deep belly with a stout tip perfect for hard use tasks. Gene's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
Handle scales are black and white ebony (Diospyros malabarica) secured to the full tang using mosaic pins made by Sally Martin. A distinctive, rare true ebony, black and white ebony grows in Southeast Asia and Laos. This variety of ebony has black variegations flowing across a pale background. It is an incredible wood with amazing contrast. The scales are dovetailed to brushed titanium bolsters.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled leather pouch style custom sheath is included.
Nice work throughout!
