Description: South African knifemaker Hennie du Plessis creates an exceptional knife. This Meteorite Hunter Set shows his tremendous attention to all the details. The fit and finish is impeccable, providing an excellent showcase of exotic materials. This set is sure to be the pride of most any collection.
Both knives feature hand ground Gibeon meteorite blades. The meteorite used is particularly nice and has no inclusions. The tang and flats are mirror polished, nearly hiding the crystalline pattern. The grinds are etched to reveal pattern hidden within. The Gibeon meteorite landed in Great Namaqualand, Namibia, Africa. It radio carbon dates to over 4 billion years ago. Gibeon fragments are spread over one of the largest strewn fields in the world, measuring 70 miles wide by 230 miles long and have a distinctive pattern known as the Widmanstatten pattern, which is one of the richest and most distinct patterns found in meteorites. The crystalline patterns can only form in the vacuum of space. The large metallic crystals require millions of years of cooling to form from a molten planetary core fragment. It has been estimated that it took about 1000 years for these molten pieces of planetary core to cool by just 1 degree Celsius!
Handle scales are dyed and stabilized giraffe bone. They are set on the meteorite full tang for strength and durability. The gently rounded handle feels sturdy and fills your hand perfectly. By using torx screws, Hennie ensures the knife can be taken apart if future repairs are ever needed. Mosaic damascus bolsters are dovetailed to the scales, ensuring a perfect fit. The mosaic damascus was hand forged by renowned South African bladesmith Henning Wilkinson.
The knives come in a presentation tambootie wood box with sneezewood accents, hand build by Brian Coetzee. Brian is well known for his exceptional, precision boxes.
Excellent work throughout!
