Description: Journeyman Smith Shawn Ellis lives in the Ozarks -- an area well known for hunting and fishing. After searching for a knife that would perform well -- holding a keen, long lasting edge -- Sean realized that he had to learn how to forge and create his own knives. Shawn even competed in and won the Forged in Fire competition as seen on the History Channel. Shawn's work has come a long way over the last few years and this Integral Mosaic Field Knife with Ancient Walrus Ivory shows his skills at their best.
The broad 6-3/4 inch mosaic damascus blade is forged from 1084 and 15n20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The high contrast convoluted pattern is extremely engaging. A large recurve increases cutting and chopping power. Shawn's mark and J.S. stamp are on the left side of the blade.
The bolster is integral to the blade, with the damascus pattern moving seamlessly from bolster to blade. This technique has superior structural integrity and requires a particularly talented smith. The bolster is carved to accommodate a comfortable grip when holding the knife sideways or choking up on the knife during field tasks.
Ancient walrus ivory scales are heirloom fit to the damascus bolster and tang. This painstaking process ensures excellent fit even if the natural ivory shrinks over decades. The premium walrus ivory is well matched in cream and caramel tones. The sterling silver pins securing the scales are hand domed and polished.
To keep the knife close at hand, a pouch style leather sheath designed for horizontal carry is included.
Exceptional work throughout!
