Description: This exquisite Pesh-Kabz was created by Forged in Fire winner, Jordan LaMothe. Jordan became a journeyman smith in 2018 and a mastersmith in 2021. Twenty-five year old Jordan works in a coal forge on his family's farm in Hebron, NY. His tremendous attention to detail is matched by his exquisite attention to every detail.
Coming back from the Blade Show with mastersmith test knives is one of the great highlights of each year. When a bladesmith tests to become a mastersmith, five knives are made by the applicant that are the height of their work. These knives are judged by ABS Mastersmiths on fit and finish, as well as general artistry. The standards are exacting. This knife was the highlight of his mastersmith test set. At Blade Show 2021 Awards, Jordan LaMothe was a big winner. Not only was he honored to join the ranks of master smiths, but he was the only maker to take home two Blade Show awards: This knife was awarded Best Fixed Blade and Best in Show at the 2021 Blade Show. Additionally, he was awarded the BR Hughes Award for the best mastersmith knife to be judged. Clearly, Jordan is making significant waves with his exquisite one-of-a-kind art knives. This Damascus Pesh-Kabz is an impressive display of craftsmanship and will certainly be the center of any collection! It is among the most impressive knives to ever have been shown on BladeGallery.
The pesh-kabz is an Indo-Persian knife that originated in Safavid Persia in the 17th century. It was designed to penetrate mail armor worn by soldiers of the day. The name means "fore-grip" in the Persian language. This knife is typically used as a thrusting weapon held upside down in the hand with the thumb on the bottom of the handle, though the hollow ground blade also has considerable slicing performance and so the pesh-kabz is also a formidable slashing, cutting knife. This knife became widespread through Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent during the Mughal period. After armor ceased to be worn by modern armies, the pesh-kabz retained its utility as a close combat knife. It is still used today as a personal weapon as well as a ceremonial badge of adulthood for Pashtun and other Afghan hill tribes.
The 12 inch blade was forged to shape. The intricate damascus combines many bars of alternating twist pattern damascus -- beginning with 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels. The center of the blade features a hollow with a sharp T-ridge along the spine and convex ground edge. The top of the spine is also hollowed. This incredibly complex grind could only be done entirely by hand. It is completed with utter perfection. Jordan's maker's mark and J.S. in the hollow of the spine.
Handle scales are presentation grade walnut, set in place with torx screws. Fine silver spacers separate the wood from the twist pattern damascus frame. Showing an exceptional level of craftsmanship, Lamothe built this knife with take-down construction. This technique requires a particularly talented knifemaker who is capable of extremely tight tolerances. Take-down construction allows a knife to be dismantled if a significant repair is ever needed.
Knives of this caliber are very rare to find, making this a true collector's piece! It is easily among the most impressive knives we have ever been able to offer.
Exceptional work throughout!
