Description: This Engraved Bowie with Mammoth Ivory is a spectacular knife by Journeyman Smith Kelly Vermeer-Vella. Kelly is a Forged in Fire champion, an exceptional bladesmith, and a renowned farrier. Perhaps it is no surprise that this bowie knife won Best Fixed Blade at the 2021 ICCE custom knife show.
The 11 inch blade was hard forged from Kelly's own Riptide pattern damascus. The finely detailed pattern was forged to shape from 1075 and 15N20 carbon steels. The long swedge is brought just shy of fully sharpened.
The S-guard is formed from mild steel. It was meticulously engraved by Texas knifemaker and engraver Sam Gooding. Presentation grade mammoth bark handle scales are set on the full tang. The ancient ivory has a tremendous mix of rare green and black tones with chocolate and caramel. This is some particularly nice ivory! Heat colored, hand fileworked liners are set between scales and tang as well as between the two damascus ferrule. A particularly nice touch is that even the handmade screws that set the handle scales in place are damascus!
Exceptional work throughout!
