Description: Niko Nicolaides is an American bladesmith from Detroit, Michigan. He was originally trained as a machinist running CAD and CAM machines and also has a background in working in professional kitchens. He combines this history to create high quality, functional kitchen knives that any chef would love to own. Today, Niko is a full time knifemaker. He specializes in hand forged chef knives with integral bolsters and often works with beautiful damascus patterns. He is definetely a maker to keep an eye out for.
This 8 inch chefs knife is forged from Niko's own multi-bar damascus -- combining 1084 and 15n20 carbon steels for excellent edge retention. A bold twist pattern damascus forms the cutting edge, with a central damascus bar providing a very dramatic appearance. The spine is nicely rounded for a comfortable pinch grip. Niko's makers mark can be seen on the right side of the blade.
The bolster is fully integral to the blade, with the damascus pattern moving seamlessly from bolster to blade. This technique has superior structural integrity and requires a particularly talented smith. The front of the bolster is nicely curved to encourage a comfortable pinch grip.
The western style handle is made from dyed and stabilized maple burl. It is nicely contoured for a secure, comfortable grip - swelling at the palm, moving into a slimmer waist, and swelling again at the end of the handle. A darker dyed and stabilized maple burl spacer adds contrast between the handle and damascus bolster. The stabilized wood will hold up well to the demands of either a home or commercial kitchen.
Excellent work throughout!
