Description: The exceptional Nordic hunter was made by award winning Norwegian knifemaker Åge Olstad. Olstad lives in Jevnaker, a small town approximately an hour north of Oslo. His work is truly exceptional and regretably it rarely gets to the US. This Nordic Hunter has been in a private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in near-new condition. There is the slightest, light scuffing on the heat colored blade. The knife has never been used to cut and been carried.
The heat blued blade was forged from carbon steels by Danish bladesmith Poul Strande. A central bar of 20C carbon steel is surrounded by a thin layer of nickel, followed by mild steel. The fileworked spine is inlaid with brass. The combination is very striking.
The handle is formed from gabon ebony, perfectly fit to a sterling silver pommel and guard. A hallmark of Olstad's work, the finial is formed into the shape of a talon grasping a silver orb. The right side of the pommel and bolster are meticulously carved. Gold plated accents provide a nice contrast.
The traditional Nordic leather sheath has sterling silver furniture. Carving reflects the bolsters. Like the handle, the sheath culinates in a sterling silver talon and orb.
Exceptional work throughout!
