Description: Fred Ott's work is exceptional -- showing off his tremendous sense of design and skill in implementation. This Fluted Hamon Fighter would perform exceptionally well out in the field, yet it would be at home in even the most refined collection.
The blade is hand forged W2 carbon steel with a clay zone heat treatment. This technique, borrowed from Japanese swords, creates a softer, supportive spine, with a hard, long lasting edge. The undulating line in the steel (called a hamon) shows the transition between the softer spine and the hard cutting edge. Fred's maker mark is shown on the left ricasso.
The handle is sculpted from spalted tamarind (Tamarindus indica). Tamarind trees are located in tropic regions throughout the world. Their wood is desirable for its sapwood that is highly likely to spalt. Spacers formed from desert ironwood (Olneya tesota) and ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) surrounded by hand fileworked copper spacers. The oval guard and cap at the end of the handle are made from antiqued bronze. The handle is extremely comfortable and provides plenty of grip.
To keep the knife close a hand, a goat skin wrapped leather sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
