Description: I was excited when Mastersmith David Lisch introduced me to Mike Clark Jr. Mike's attention to detail was clearly evident in his exquisite work. Given the level of work, it is no surprise that Mike easily passed his journeyman smith test at the 2019 Blade Show in Atlanta, GA.
This forged spear point bowie was part of Clark's JS test set. When a maker tests to become a journeyman, they create five knives that are the height of their work. These five knives are judged by established masters to determine if the maker's work is up to snuff. Often, prospective journeymen spend 2-3 times as long creating these five knives as they would generally do, as they know that their work will be poured over by the masters. These five knives are generally considered to be among the most collectable knives of a maker's career.
The spear point blade was forged to shape from 52100 carbon steel and features a hand rubbed satin finish. Many knifemakers (including the likes of Bill Burke, Ed Fowler, Bob Kramer, and more) and knife users consider 52100 to be among the best, if not the best steel used in modern knifemaking. 52100 takes a super-sharp, long lasting edge. It has tremendous resilience and strength. Because this knife is made from carbon steel, we recommend using camellia oil to avoid rust.
The handle is made from stabalized spalted maple burl. The wood, with its black spalting lines, is particularly dramatic. The oval guard and nut at the pommel are made from 416 stainless steel. The ferrule is perfectly fit to the oval guard and is made from blued stainless steel. This knife has great balance and feels exceptional in hand.
This knife is accompanied by a custom hand tooled, hand stitched leather sheath.
Excellent work throughout!
