Description: This exceptional puukko is the work of Jeremy Spake of Portland, Oregon. Jeremy has been making knives since 2010. His work is heavily influenced by Scandinavian knives. This Nordic style Puukko will be as comfortable on your belt out in the field as it would be in any collection!
Jeremy hand forged the blade from 52100 carbon steel. Many knifemakers (including the likes of Mastersmiths Bill Burke, Ed Fowler, Bob Kramer, and more) and knife users consider 52100 to be among the best, if not the best steel used in modern knifemaking. 52100 takes a super-sharp, long lasting edge. It has tremendous resilience and strength. A hand rubbed satin finish adds an heirloom appearance. The hidden tang blade is secured to a brass pommel increasing strength and durability.
The handle is made from a beautiful section of redwood lace (Sequoia sempervirens). Redwood is in the family of the largest living trees that have ever lived! The handle combines four sections of this beautifully high figured wood with a central section of Steller's sea cow. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and very good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct. Brass and black fiber spacers assist the handle in adjusting to humidity and temperature changes. A matching brass guard completes the handle.
The knife is accompanied by a traditional Finnish hard leather sheath with a wood liner to keep the knife safely close at hand.
Exceptional work throughout!
