Description: Dew (Ryuichi) Hara is the adult son of renowned knifemaker Koji Hara. Dew grew up in a knife family and naturally got involved with the knifemaking by helping his father and learning his techniques. Koji Hara is well known for creating art knives with tremendous precision and detailed inlays. After working in his father's workshop for over 20 years, Dew decided to create his own knives.
Kisaragi gets its namesake from one of twelve Mutsuki-class destroyers, built for the Imperial Japanese Navy before World War II. Kisaragi was the second major Japanese warship lost during the war after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Like a well built ship, this knife has elegant lines, and echoes durability built in a small package.
The modified wharnecliffe blade is formed from san mai damascus. A central VG-10 stainless steel core is surrounded by layers of alternating stainless and nickel. San mai provides a hard cutting edge, but prevents the blade from becoming to brittle. VG-10 has exceptional wear resistance and can take a razor sharp edge. The polished surface shows the many dramatic layers. Aggressive jimping and a choil allow you to choke up on the blade for more delicate cutting tasks.
The blade runs on bearings and is easily opened using the ambidextrous flipper mechanism. It is perfectly centered and has silky-smooth action.
The handle is made from satin finished 316 stainless steel hand engraved with Wisteria vines. This beautiful plant is commonly used in ornamentation in Japan. 420 stainless steel liners are jewel polished on the interior. The stainless steel back spacer has jimping to provide additional traction when pulling the folder from the pocket. The satin finished pocket clip is mounted for right-handed, tip-up carry is marked with serial number 044 and his makers mark.
Excellent work throughout!
