Description: Koji Hara's inimitable style has won him admiration from collectors and fellow makers alike. He consistently creates knives that are renowned for their precision, craftsmanship, and performance.
Hara has been best known for his knives made from Cowry Y. He has created this knife from Tamahagane forged and heat treated by Japanese swordsmith Takaba Hiromune. Tamahagane (jewel steel) is extracted from iron sand using techniques developed in Japan over 1500 years ago. A mix of steels, arranged for their imperfections as much as their purity results in this steel which has made the Japanese sword so revered. The undulating heat treatment line was created using the same traditional clay zone heat treatment used when making swords. This style, where many crystal particles are seen is called nie-deki. The blade finishes at the tip with a small reverse tanto tip. It features a traditional Japanese sword polish.
The blade is well centered with smooth action. It is easily opened using the blacklip mother of pearl thumbstud.
Hand satin finished 420 stainless steel handle scales are inlaid with blacklip mother of pearl. The bamboo design is featured on both sides and further enhanced with tsuchime, or a hand hammered finish, on the metal between the bamboo stalks. The backbar, like the sides of the knife, is inlaid with sections blacklip mother of pearl separated by stainless steel spacers.
Along with the folder, Koji Hara has included the sword tang (called a nakago in the Japanese sword world). This section of the sword is used by collectors to authenticate Japanese swords. It features Takaba Hiromune's engraved makers' mark. The knife is also accompanied by a pocket pouch made from antique kimono fabric and a lined presentation box made from kiriwood.
Exceptional fit and finish throughout!
