Many years ago a blacksmith worked on our farm and introduced me to forging, heat treating, and casting handles on knives. From the time I was 10 to around twelve I constructed about 7 knives. Because my supply of high carbon steel was limited, I ceased making knives after using our last new power hacksaw blade (I was disciplined for that endeavor).

The love of knives only grew after this initial introduction into the construction of knives. In 1991 a friend, Gary House, invited me to accompany him to the OKCA show in Eugene. I was totally overwhelmed and excited by the extremely fine craftsmanship displayed at the show. I purchased a pre-ground heat treated blade from Bob Engnath. This was the first of about 25 blades purchased from Bob. Bob's "Blades and Stuff" catalog contained 3 pages of info on knife construction which was my manual for knife construction.

I later started buying supplies from Northwest Knife supply, and with every order I chatted with Arey Vallot, who fielded all my questions for about two years. The day Arey said that she couldn't answer my question and she called on Butch to field my query was extremely exciting for me. I felt like I might even be a knifemaker at that point. One positive relationship after another were formed with other makers as time went on. Wayne Goddard, Bob and Stevie Engnath, Rick Dunkerley, Barry Gallagher,Wade Colter, Shane Taylor, Ed Fowler, William Robert Kramer, Gay Rocha, and John Davis have all offered support and friendship along the way. Soon stock removal turned to forging, forging turned to Damascus, and now Damascus has turned to Mosaic Damascus.

As a full time farmer, my knifemaking hours are limited. In order to keep my interest and satisfaction high, I primarily make what excites me. Many of my knives are influenced by Asian styles and have integral construction. I try to incorporate all elements of design into whatever blade I make. I strive to make all my pieces elegant, without sacrificing fit, form and function. As I practically OD on paper work I find that my best vehicle for sales is BladeGallery.com.
