John Doyle is a knifemaker/bladesmith living in Northern Lower Michigan with his wife Jennifer and their children.  John grew up in the forests of Michigan where hunting and fishing were a large part of his life.  Knives are a very important part of that lifestyle and he quickly learned the value of having a good knife.  The passion took hold and grew, and at the age of 12 he knew he wanted to make a knife someday.
In late 2009, living in Montana and being laid off from his construction job, he decided to get serious about knifemaking and started looking around for how to get started.  Ultimately, it led him to Tom McGinnis of Ozark Knifemakers in Ozark Missouri.  John took a class from Tom and got a good foundation of fundamental skills to build on.
Back in Montana, John had further questions and sought any makers close to him.  This search led John to find Master Smiths Ed Caffrey and Jon Christensen, both makers played a huge role in his knife making and bladesmithing.  John learned from them how to forge blades and also make his knives more refined, lighter and more balanced while making them tougher and hold an edge longer.
In addition to Tom, Ed, and Jon, John also credits fellow makers Bruce “Bing” Bingenheimer and Mike Quesenberry as important influences in his level of fit and finish, and is also proud to call them true friends.
John likes to forge blades, when possible and uses 1075 and W2 steels the most, and occasionally uses 80CrV2, 1095 and 1084 for some blades.  He greatly prefers unique wood handles but will also use ivory and synthetics on occasion.  He joined the American Bladesmith Society in 2014.
