Description: This knife was made by Seattle native, Bhakti Sa. Bhakti apprenticed under Mastersmith David Lisch. Bhakti's understanding of chef's knives is exceptional and clearly shows the influence of both Mastersmith David Lisch and Mareko Maumasi.
This chef's utility knife is likely to become a primary knife used in your kitchen. It is small enough to be used as a paring knife -- performing detailed cuts in the kitchen -- yet it is deep enough to be used as a small chef's knife -- slicing, chopping, and mincing. Whether taking eyes out of potatoes or mincing shallots, this knife will become a 'goto' knife.
Bhakti forged the disrupted Ws damascus beginning with 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels. This ensures a keen long lasting edge as well as exceptional beauty! The high contrast pattern is immediately captivating. The blade and bolster are made from one solid piece of damascus. Though integral knives are regularly done in production work, creating an integral bolster in a custom setting is extremely difficult and shows the maker's skill at its best.
Sa formed the elegantly contoured handle from presentation grade spalted maple (Acer macrophyllum). The workmanship is beautiful, and the wood chosen is gorgeous with a twisted underlying figure and deep black spalting lines. Contours ensure a comfortable and safe grip. Alternating silicon bronze and black G10 spacers set between the handle and integral bolster assist the wood to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. By using stabilized wood, Sa ensures this knife will hold up well to the high demands of either a professional or home kitchen.
A gorgeous piece built for serious use, yet one of the more dramatic kitchen knives that I have come across.
