Description: This stunning Fantail Bowie knife was made by Mastersmith Tim Hancock. Tim Hancock is a mastersmith out of Scottsdale, Arizona well known for making art knives, as well as working fixed blades and folders. He believes a knife's function is paramount, but should be combined with embellishments to allow a knife to have its own unique character. This knife was made by Tim for the 2009 Art Knife Invitational Show in San Diego, CA. It has been in a single private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday. In addition to the sheath, the knife is accompanied by the 2009 AKI catalog. This knife is featured on page 22 of the catalog.
The straight back blade is made from Tim's Fourth of July mosaic damascus, forged from carbon steels. The intricate patterns radiate from central points like finale fireworks in the sky. The multi-facetted blade culminates in a diamond shape and features a crescent notch fit to the damascus guard. Hancock's maker's mark is on the left side of the blade and his MS stamp and the year 2009 is featured on the right side.
The frame handle is constructed from cream toned mammoth ivory secured using four silver pins. The ivory meets perfectly with the five piece ferrule. Fileworked silver liners separate matching damascus. The damascus guard is fit perfectly between the blade and ferrule. The mammoth ivory scales are set on filed silver liners that surround the damascus frame. The handle is completed with a damascus pommel carved into a fantail. This handle features a takedown construction via a threaded finial at the end of the pommel. This allows the knife to be disassembled if maintenance is ever needed. All the fittings are made from the same damascus pattern, but each is at a different stage of the patterning process.
To protect the knife during transportation, Tim has included a handmade leather sheath that features a black alligator overlay and damascus embellishments.
Exceptional work throughout!
