Description: Mastersmith David Lisch is perhaps best known for his Bowies and his understanding of stag. This exceptional S-Guard Guard Bowie shows David's attention to detail and his exceptional skill as both a bladesmith and a blacksmith! This Bowie was made while David was a journeyman smith. It has been in a private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
The 10-3/4 inch clip point blade is forged from David's own feather pattern damascus. The intricate, captivating pattern begins at the ricasso and moves out into the blade. David used 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels to ensure long edge retention and high contrast.
The S-guard, pommel, and ferrule are formed from antique wrought iron that has been heat blued. A copper spacer separates the guard and ferrule. A central column of stag provides a secure, comfortable grip. The amber stag has been lightly polished, leaving plenty of the natural texture, yet creating a smoother, more elegant handle. The sides of the pommel are textured to continue the shape of the stag. Showing Lisch's roots as a blacksmith, the pommel is forged into a wizened Native American face. This is among his best facial forgings that I have encountered.
This bowie knife is accompanied by a handmade rawhide leather sheath by John Cohea. John is considered one of the best frontier style sheath makers in the world. His work has been featured in numerous magazines and at least two instructional DVDs on making rawhide sheaths. A single decorative seam travels up the center of the sheath. A copper and bronze dream catcher is set on the throat. An antique glass bead is set in the middle. A textured copper feather hangs from the dram catcher. Antiqued ridged copper plates are inlaid into the rawhide. Decorative copper rivets and a rawhide belt loop complete the sheath. Cohea's sheath on its own is a masterwork and combined with Lisch's Bowie, this is a truly exceptional set.
Excellent work throughout!
