Description: Mastersmith Shane Taylor forges a spectacular knife, and this folder is no exception. The batwing folder is the knife that has most defined Mastersmith Shane Taylor's knifemaking career. He developed this style relatively early in his knifemaking and it certainly put him on the map. It is a tremendously comfortable and engaging shape.
Shane began by forging the blade and bolsters using his own mosaic damascus. The complex pattern shows virtually no distortion -- showing Shane's tremendous skill at the forge. By using carbon steels, Shane ensures a keen, long lasting edge. The step down style bolster creates the impression of a longer blade when the knife is opened.
The very rare mammoth ivory scales combine black, blue/grey and cream tones. These colors are particularly desirable and dramatic and result from minerals leaching into the ivory across thousands of years. The ivory meets with the bolsters in an elegant arc. 15N20 liners are textured and nitre blued. The 1084 carbon steel backbar is engraved both inside and out -- a tremendous complement to the mosaic damascus blade and bolsters.
As with Shane's other batwing folders, the knife fits securely into the hand and allows several grips. As you'd expect, the blade is well centered, and the action silky smooth.
Simply world class!
