Description: Journeyman Smith Keith Fludder resides in New South Wales, Australia. He started making knives in 1989 and is a full time maker. Keith views knives as works of art, but also believes knives have to be fully functional and the designs and materials chosen must fit the purpose of the end product. The Kukri, which was used in battle and hunt by the Gurka people, was worn proudly. It is fierce blade and they honor it as a special weapon which contains a spirit of its own. This knife was kept in a private collection since it was made in 2018. By all appearances it is in brand new condition and Fludder could have made it yesterday!
This damascus kukri is a perfect example of Keith's skill at the forge. The 12-1/4" recurve blade is forged from Keith's own Texas Wind pattern damascus and will have excellent edge retention. The deep recurve ensures this will an aggressive cutter or a highly effective chopper. Because this knife is made from carbon steel, we recommend using camellia oil to avoid rust.
The handle is formed from presentation grade Australian ringed gidgee wood. Gidgee is a member of the Acacia family (same family as koa). It grows in arid regions of Australia resulting in dense, hard wood similar to desert ironwood. The slow-growing gidgee may hang on for hundreds of years and produces one of Australia’s hardest and most durable timbers. The ringed wood nicely complements the complex damascus pattern. The handle is finished with a textured stainless steel guard and copper and G10 spacers.
A brown leather sheath made by Keith is included to keep the knife close at hand.
