Description: Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration continues to come from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans
Daniel's friction folders have always been hard to find. This one was made around 2004 and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, Daniel could have made it yesterday.
The blade was forged to shape from Winkler's own damascus, beginning with carbon steels.
Handle scales are formed from ancient mammoth ivory. This ivory combines burnt cream, caramel and green. These colors enter the ivory from mineral deposits in the soil where the ivory was hidden for millennia. Green toned mammoth ivory is particularly rare and desirable. The ivory is dovetailed to antiqued mild steel bolsters. A forged curl acts as the blade lock and a second curl completes the spine.
The neck sheath is handmade by Karen Shook. It is hand cut and then hand-stitched. Decorative thongs are set with antique trade beads. The sheath itself is a work of art.
This is a rare opportunity to procure a hand forged knife by Mastersmith Daniel Winkler!
