Description: Kevin Klein did his apprenticeship under Mastersmith JD Smith from 2012 - 2016. Having the opportunity to work under such a renowned maker clearly gave him a tremendous understanding of knives and their materials. In September of 2016, he moved to Portland, Maine to work in an independent shop. His first knife was published in Blade Magazine in an article on "Knifemakers to Watch in 2013". He has been regularly published since then and is making waves in the knife industry.
The large blade was forged to shape using a technique called san mai. 15N20 and 1084 carbon steels were combined to form the intricate pattern.
The elegant handle combines mokume fittings with African blackwood Dalbergia melanoxylon. The combination of the dark toned wood with the mokume gane is particularly striking. The mokume combines silver, copper and two different shibuichi alloys (combining different amounts of copper and silver). The mokume is particularly high contrast and immediately grabs attention.
This knife clearly shows Kevin's work at its best. It is a knife that immediately grabs attention and keeps revealing more details upon further examination. Excellent fit and finish throughout!
