Description: This exceptional camp knife was hand forged by Mastersmith David Lisch for a demonstration at the 2016 ABANA conference. It is a knife with tremendous presence and begs to be brought out for some serious chopping!
The 10 inch long blade was forged to shape from W2 carbon steel. A traditional Japanese heat treatment results in a differential hardness. The edge of the blade is extremely hard, but supported by the softer central section of the blade. The spine features a long 'turn back' - the undulating heat treatment line travels along the cutting edge and turns back as it approaches the tip, travelling just below the fully hardened swedge. A turn-back in the hamon is particularly difficult to create and shows David's skill in this technique.
Both the blade and tang are distal tapered, making this a perfectly balanced, high performance knife. Ebony scales are set on the full tang using three silicon bronze pins. The wood is quite dramatic, with lighter sections included in the dark wood. It is nicely carved to swell at the palm, move into a slimmer waist, finally swelling again at the end. It is extremely comfortable -- you won't want to put it down!
Exceptional work throughout!
