Description: Mastersmith Jay Hendrickson's knives have always inspired me. There is a gentlemanly elegance to his work that matches his personality. Silver vines are inlaid into presentation grade curly maple. The antiqued wood gives an heirloom quality to this exceptional Jay Hendrickson hunter. Jay created the Nanook Hunter style as his ideal hunting knife. It is an incredible knife shape to use out in the field, though this knife will also feel at home in any collection.
Jay began by forging the L2 carbon steel blade to shape. The appleseed grind is a hallmark of Jay's hand forged knives. A clear differential heat treatment line travels along the blade, showing the transition between soft, supportive spine and the keen, hard edge steel. Jay believes strongly in the hand forging process and it clearly shows in his work. By forging the blade to shape, Jay ensures optimal edge retention.
The handle is formed from presentation grade curly maple combined with stag. Scrolls of fine silver are meticulously inlaid into each side of the maple. The scales are set on a distal tapered full tang, ensuring a perfect balance. The shaping of the maple feels great in hand. All finishing and embellishments -- of both knives and sheaths -- are completed in Jay's shop. This knife is accompanied by a hand tooled leather wrapped basswood sheath.
