Description: Internationally known sculptor Tom Sterling creates works of art from semi-precious hardwoods, horn, antler, ancient ivories, and metals as well. Tom Sterling began a unique and award winning career by carving Japanese netsuke (pronounced net-skeh). Netsuke is a unique form of small sculpture which developed as an art form in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years.
This fetish is hand created from copper. Fetishes are small carvings made from various materials by Native American peoples. These carvings have traditionally served a ceremonial purpose for their creators and depict animals and icons integral to their culture.
This Raven fetish is based on a Puget Sound Native American legend which says that in the beginning Raven lived in the spirit world, but one day he carried a rock away over the sea. When Raven dropped the stone into the water, it swelled and swelled, ultimately becoming the land we know today. Tom hand-chased and carved this raven skull from solid copper, which is perched upon a beach rock. The skull and stone are both set inside a copper bowl and secured with rawhide sinew.
A very novel and curious piece, sure to spark conversation. The fetish measures approximately 1-1/2 inches long, 1-1/10 inches wide, and one inch tall.
