Description: Aaron Wilburn, who was honored as a journeyman smith in June 2009, and a Mastersmith in 2013 creates serious knives and this bowie is a great example of his work! This knife was made shortly before he became a Mastersmith in June.
The large damascus blade was forged to shape from his own damascus. The Turkish twist pattern immediately grabs attention, with stark contrast between the twisted layers of steel. The pattern is created by forging 4 bars of twist damascus set in opposing directions. It is an extremely difficult pattern to create and shows Aaron's skill at the forge. The substantial blade is distal tapered for optimal balance. The clip is fully sharpened.
Aaron used ancient oosic to create the handle for the handle of this piece. Oosic usually is found washed up on shore or uncovered after a storm in Alaska, though it is found elsewhere in the world as well. It comes in varying shades and colors dependent on where it has been buried and the mineral contents of that area which have entered and changed the original coloring. The handle is surrounded by a twist damascus bolster and guard. The natural texture of the interior bone is left rough at the end.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath. Aaron has made the strap detachable, allowing it to be replaced if the blade ever cuts or damages the strap.
Exceptional work throughout!
