Description: The Dragonslayer Poignard is a continuation on the legend of St. George and the Dragon, as a secondary close quarters weapon to the spear used in slaying the dragon. Tom Sterling brings immense creativity and playfulness to a modern take on an ancient legend, as the Dragonslayer Poignard clearly demonstrates in his exemplary mastery as a craftsman and artist.
Tom Sterling's modern interpretation of the poignard draws heavily on Celtic and medieval influences, and is immediately captivating. It is hand forged, filed, engraved, and carved from a single piece of 1045 carbon steel. Hand carved dragon heads and Viking warriors embellish each side of the handle.
The reliquary case was created from a vintage brass foot rail from the bar of the historic Leopold Hotel in Bellingham, WA, complete with an ironwood end cap. The fittings are made of English Boxwood with ancient ivory adornments. The top of the reliquary is inscribed with Celtic runes from the ancient Havamal texts that translates as "Never walk away from home ahead of your axe and sword." An ingenious latching mechanism secures the poignard in the reliquary, which is then held in place in the brass case by an ancient ivory handled screw knob. A hand made Walnut stand displays the reliquary and poignard when not in the brass case.
