Description: Each year at Blade Show, bladesmiths test to join the ranks of journeymen and masters. Five knives are made by each applicant that are the height of their work at the time. These knives are judged by Mastersmiths on fit and finish, as well as general artistry. Each must be forged to shape. The standards are exacting. The five journeyman smith test knives are often considered to be the most collectible work of a maker's career. With this exceptional knife, Dana Hackney joined the ranks of ABS Journeyman Smith at the 2012 Blade Show.
Journeyman Smith Dana Hackney is a maker who continues to challenge himself and improve his craft. His sense of design is exceptional and only matched with his level of attention to detail.
Dana began the piece by forging the blade to shape from 1084 carbon steel, which he completed with a hand-rubbed satin finish - this results in a stylish and heirloom appearance. The 416 stainless steel guard has also been hand satin finished. A bronze spacer separates the guard from the warm toned wood handle. The koa burl has a swirling figure with a slight curl. The handle finishes in a downturned beak. A thoughtfully designed piece with exceptional fit and finish throughout! It is no surprise that Dana was deemed a Journeyman Smith based on this dramatic knife.
