Description: This knife is among the knives that put Shane Taylor on the map. It was made in 1997, while he was developing the batwing fighter style. The steel is a complex san mai combing random pattern damascus at the core (forged by Shane from 15N20 and 1084 carbon steels) and a complex mountain scene mosaic damascus on the sides. Creating the mosaic damascus took Shane two weeks and created enough steel to make only four knives. This said, it was well worth it, as this continues to be one of the most impressive pieces of steel made to date. It is a hallmark knife for Shane. The knife has been in a private collection and is in new condition.
As the steel moves into the cutting edge, the underlying random pattern damascus is revealed. 1084 and 15N20 ensure exceptional edge holding. The sides feature Shane's complex mountain pattern. By using such a wide range of steels, it meant that when heat blued, there would be incredible differentiation in pattern and tone. Here, he has used a black lacquer finish.
The bolsters are integral, showing off the dramatic, high contrast sides and revealing the san mai technique at the base and top of the blade. The dramatically distal tapered blade results in optimal balance. The spine is fileworked in a vine pattern.
Ironwood burl scales are dovetailed to the integral bolsters for a perfect fit. Mosaic pins complete the nicely sculpted handle.
The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled leather sheath by JL Stites.
Exceptional work throughout on a quintessential Shane Taylor knife!
