Description: Michael Rader was honored as a Journeyman Smith in June 2006 and a Master Smith in 2010. He has a style all of his own, combining an aesthetic drawn from Medieval and Far East influences with his own vision. This sword has been in a single private collection and is in new condition. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
This stunning longsword beautifully illustrates Michael’s organic style. The blade is sole-authorship ladder pattern damascus forged from 1086 and 15N20 carbon steels. The hand-and-a-half hilt features carved presentation bubinga with G10 spacers separating the grip from the pommel and crossguard. The handle is shaped with ergonomic finger grooves and single-sided fuller for retention and orientation in use. Rounded and highly polished quillions on the 416 stainless steel crossguard exude graceful simplicity. Center of balance is approximately 1-1/2 inch in front of the crossguard. A nicely formed ricasso provides ample space for fingering techniques. The triangular cross-section pommel balances the blade out with plenty of heft to strike with.
The lack of ostentatious ornamentation gives this piece a solid feel of strength with deadly purpose. This is a sword for the warrior of few words and many campaigns.
Overall length does not include scabbard.
