Description: The hand forged blade of the dagger is beautifully sculpted. Details such as the split and flare at the heel of the blade's edge and the variance in the delicate hammered texture he incorporates (all done by hand) means this contemporary art piece the evokes a feeling of antiquity. Tom's unerring eye for design means he can incorporate even the basic necessities of knifemaking into his aesthetic - in this case, the hamon, or heat treatment line, is reminiscent of the ocean current rippling through the Puget Sound.
The engraving is stunning in design and meticulous in execution, markedly influenced by the Native American art of the Pacific Northwest. Both scales depict marine life native to the Puget Sound, from fish and octopuses to crabs and plankton. The tang is secured to the scales with two copper pins, the pin closest to the ferrule being surrounded by hand-forged and carved copper barnacle cluster inlays.
The Puget Sound Dagger is accompanied by a custom-built maple presentation box, lined in green felt and secured with brass pins. True to form, this piece is a fascinating fusion of culture and technique - with a touch of the whimsy we expect from Tom!
