Description: This majestic Japanese-influenced wakizashi is the work of Mastersmith Michael Rader. Michael's work combines aesthetics drawn from Medieval and Far East influences, melding them together into dramatic pieces that are immediately identifiable as his vision.
Michael hand forged the long, slender blade to shape from W2 carbon steel. After forging, Michael coated the spine of the blade with clay and heat treated it using a traditional Japanese technique. This results in an extremely hard, keen edge with a softer supportive spine. The undulating transition line between hard and softer steel is called a hamon. The blade was meticulously hand satin finished.
The clean lines of blade move into an integral bolster and oval damascus guard. The handle incorporates exhibition grade desert ironwood with ancient walrus ivory. Michael's superior woodworking is a hallmark of his style. The wood and ivory are meticulously combined in complex arches -- with the seams nearly beyond perception. The wood has been carved in a tribal motif.
This wakizashi is accompanied by a handmade presentation box formed from cherry, curly maple and sapele wood. The lined box is perfectly fit to the knife.
Exceptional work throughout!
