Description: This bowie knife shows the clear influence of Mastersmith Ed Fowler's Pronghorns. Eldon worked with Ed for literally hundreds of hours, and the style and craftsmanship shows in his finished knives.
Like the knives of Mastersmiths Ed Fowler and Bill Burke, each knife that Eldon creates is pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment creates some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere.
This blade features a grain pattern on the surface that is indicative of the forging only in an extremely tight temperature range. The wootz-like grain pattern on this bowie knife is particularly dramatic. This forging method results in a particularly durable and long lasting edge.
The blade was forged from 52100 steel. This is a high carbon steel in a very pure form and results in a knife steel that is as good as it gets. The blade is forged at low temperature and is subjected to a minimum of 30 low temp thermal cycles, requiring a lot of hammer work. The blade was carefully hardened three times using a differential quenching technique developed by Ed Fowler for this steel. Triple tempered to push the steel to the limit, this knife is easy to sharpen, yet holds an exceptional edge.
The stag handle provides a secure, comfortable grip. Sambar stag of this quality has become increasingly difficult to come by. This bowie is one of those knives you won't want to put down. The large brass guard is matched by a brass spacer and pommel, both of which are carved to match the texture of the stag. A serious field knife for the avid hunter or collector. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
