Description: Canadian bladesmith Mark Banfield has a unique sense of design that is only matched by his skill! This modified harpoon tip, one-of-a-kind fighter is one of the most inspired fine art knives he has designed and created to date.
Mark began by hand forging the unique harpoon-tipped blade from 1075 carbon steel. The spine is brought to stepped swayback, culminating is a fully sharpened harpoon tip. The blade was heat treated using a traditional Japanese technique whereby the spine is coated in clay, resulting in a soft, supportive spine with an ultra-hard edge. The resulting gently undulating heat treatment line is called a gunome hamon. A 'turnback' in the heat treatment line assures that the clip is fully hardened. The blade was brought to a 600 grit hand satin finish and acid etched to bring out the hamon.
The bolster is carved from bronze, and features textured sections which accent the abstract shape of the carving. The stabilized amboyna burl handle was meticulously carved into a fluted shape, perfectly coordinating with the carved bronze bolster. The wood is polished to a luxurious silky finish. The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled leather sheath. The tooling of the leather nicely complements the shape of the handle. Exceptional work throughout!
