Description: This singular dagger takes its name from the meticulously painted wooden sheath, which features elements common to art produced by the Vikings of Scandinavia during the Germanic Iron Age. This is a beautiful example of the finely detailed work for which Australian artist Carol Ann O'Connor is famous.
The dagger ground blade is formed from damascus forged from carbon steels. The five-bar damascus blade features two outer bars of Turkish twist pattern damascus and two bars of linear damascus with a central bar of explosion pattern damascus. The shape of the blade enhances the beauty and elegance of the damascus - A fuller travels through the central bar, which is a technique used to increase the stiffness and lightness of a sword or dagger. An unfullered blade only has a single center spine - fullering a blade produces two spines, substantially increasing rigidity.
The wooden handle and sheath have been handpainted and lacquered by Carol Ann O'Connor, an artist famous for her images of heroism, romance and legend. For this piece she references the depictions of animals and interlacing common to the Urnes phase of Scandinavian art. The dagger's handle features a dragon mask with hair spilling out from the back, both dragon and hair forming heavily interlaced tendrils that coil around the wood. The mask itself is a fearsome thing, jaws agape and teeth blood-tipped, human eyes providing an eerie counterpoint to the mythical animal's head. The sheath is particularly compelling, with Odin, the one-eyed Norse God, staring out implacably from his single ice-blue eye, clutching a heavily engraved and bejeweled dagger in his gnarled hands. A horned helmet rests on his head, and his two totem ravens, Hugin and Munnin, perch on his shoulders. Odin's red eyed wolves, Freki and Geri, snarl and snap at the sheath's tip, their fur blending with the hair and beard of the Viking God.A wyrm coils around the mouth of the sheath, doubling back on itself as its jaws open in a silent roar.
Both the guard and skull crusher are formed from hot blued mild steel, in blued metallic tones that complement the damascus blade and Carol's artwork without overwhelming either. A deeply etched damascus spacer joins the guard to the handle.
Excellent fit and finish throughout on a particularly captivating knife!
