Description: The uniquely shaped tanto blade is a san mai. A central layer of ZDP-189 is sandwiched between layers of ATS-34. This results in a mirror polished blade with exceptional edge holding. The flats have been textured and engraved. On the left side, a tiger runs toward the sea and looks into a stormy sky. Its teeth are inlaid with red gold whereas its eyes are formed from yellow gold. On the right, a dragon flies through the air above a stormy sea, perhaps approaching the tiger. Lightening (inlaid in yellow gold) flashes across a tempest sky. Both tiger and dragon appear to be preparing for battle.
The guard and back cap are both made from shibuichi gin and have 24kt gold inlays. This alloy is formed by mixing copper with silver (25 - 29%). The dark satin color is extremely mysterious and is considered to be the highest value in the copper alloy family. The left side of the front guard depicts a dragon with 24kt gold inlays of clouds. The eyes have also been inlaid with 24kt gold. The left side (both front and rear bolsters) depicts storm clouds with 24kt gold lightening striking a churning sea below. The handle is sting ray skin (same gawa) and has been wrapped in burgundy silk cord. Menuki are silver with 24kt gold inlay and are set on each side. Both show a detailed dragon curled in sleep.
This knife was made in 2000 and has been in a single collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. Exceptional fit and finish throughout!
