Description: Mastersmith Kevin Harvey was inspired by Bowies made during the American War of Independence (1775 - 1781) when he made this exceptional knife. His work is meticulous as well as being historically accurate and so it is no surprise that he won Best Historical Knife at the 2008 Southern Africa Knifemakers' Guild Show.
Kevin created a damascus pattern that could only be made by meticulously hand forging the blade to shape. First, he began by forging out a tight W's pattern. Then, as the blade came close to being forged to shape, he forged in a Star Burst by introducing a radiating ladder pattern. The results are immediately captivating. The clip has been brought to a fully sharpened edge.
The handle is formed from snakepod wood (also called red ebony) that was harvested in Malawi. The warm toned wood has a nice mix of light and dark tones. A D-guard was forged to shape from Kevin's random pattern damascus. A front ferrule is formed from nickel silver and has been meticulously hand engraved in floral scroll. On the left side, he has engraved "IN GOD WE TRUST". The butt plate is formed from a damascus pattern that Kevin calls "Random Chaos". The sheath is formed from cowhide with ostrich leg leather inlay. The frame is formed from bush pig leather.
The knife is accompanied by a laminated color photocopy of the award certificate as well as a certificate from the maker.
