Description: The batwing folder is the knife that has defined Mastersmith Shane Taylor's knifemaking career. He developed this style relatively early in his knifemaking it certainly put him on the map. The Zipper-Weld Batwing Folder is a particularly rare find! Completed on July 7th, 1997, this is the second folder that Shane ever made. It is his first batwing folder that he ever made. It has been meticulously cared for and by all appearances could have been made yesterday. It has never been sharpened since it was first made by Shane and appears to never have been used to cut. The lockup is exceptional and the blade perfectly centered with silky smooth action.
The Damascus was forged using a process called a zipper weld. Back in 1997, Shane was experimenting with this technique, but made only a very few knives using it due to the tremendous difficulty. Two separate bars of mosaic Damascus were forged together in a gently undulating "zipper". The blade is easily opened using the abalone thumb stud. The liners are heat blued and hand fileworked 15N20 carbon steel. The backbar is matching Damascus. The knife has been fileworked, both inside and out.
An exceptional find!
