Description: This exceptional tanto combines Japanese and American techniques to create a knife with tremendous impact. Michael, who was honored as a Journeyman Smith in June 2006 has a style all of his own. His work combines an aesthetic drawn from Medieval and Far East influences.
Michael forged the blade from 15N20 and 8660 carbon steels into a pattern that he calls Wild Random. The pattern is bold from a distance, but has complex pools and rivulets upon closer examination. By forging the blade to shape, Michael has assured exceptional strength and beauty. A mar quench, cryogenic heat treatment, and triple temper result in optimal edge retention.
The handle is formed from koa and curly maple. Both woods have been stabilized and are highly polished, bringing out the dramatic chatoyancy. The woods are meticulously combined in complex arches -- with the seams nearly beyond perception. Exceptional work throughout.
