Description: The Bowie knife style was established during the antebellum era. Cutlers such as Daniel Searles, Rees Fitzpatrick, and English & Huber were sought out for their outstanding work. Rees Fitzpatrick, an apprentice of Daniel Searles, was considered one of the best. Fitzpatrick allegedly built the blade for the first Bowie knife.
Matt Diskin has done a modern recreation of this original master work -- with a level of artistry and perfection certainly not even achieved by the original. The blade is a random pattern Damascus with a very high layer count. The long clip has been fully sharpened and finishes with a fuller on both sides. The section at the fully has been differentially heat treated to assure a very sturdy blade.. The edge of the blade terminates in an elegant Spanish notch. Before entering the mokume gane guard, Matt has forged an integral Damascus ferrule. This type of forging is particularly difficult and shows Matt's skill at its best. The handle is formed from an exceptional piece of fossil walrus ivory. Burnt cream tones predominate with light and dark coffee toned sections. Domed pins formed from sterling silver nicely compliment the carved handle. The guard and front and rear spacers are formed from Mokume Gane. This mokume was forged by Matt from pure silver and nickel. This knife is able to be fully disassembled. Take down knives are particularly hard to make as the fit and finish must be absolutely perfect.
The accompanying sheath is a masterpiece on its own. The sheath, including the frog, is precision fit to the blade from Matt's Mokume Gane. A particularly nice touch is the hole that reveals the view through the Spanish notch.
Exceptional!
