Description: The Pronghorn Camp Knife has the styling of Mastersmith Ed Fowler's Pronghorns along with a thicker blade. Eldon worked with Ed for literally hundreds of hours and the craftsmanship shows in his finished pieces. Like the knives of Ed Fowler and Bill Burke, each knife that Eldon created was pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment creates some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere. This Pronghorn Camp Knife was made by Eldon in th summer of 2007. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Perkins could have just made it. Regrettably, Eldon passed away in 2011.
This blade features a grain pattern on the surface that is indicative of forging only in an extremely small temperature range. This forging method results in a particularly durable and long lasting edge. This pattern is often compared with wootz. The grain pattern on this camp knife is particularly good.
The blade was forged from 52100E steel. This is a high carbon, high chrome steel in a very pure form and results in a knife steel that is as good as it gets. The blade is forged at low temperature. It is subjected to a minimum of 30 low temp thermal cycles, which requires a lot of hammer work. The blade was carefully hardened three times using a differential hardening technique developed by Ed Fowler Bill Burke for this steel. Triple tempered to push the steel to the limit, this knife is easy to sharpen, yet holds an exceptional edge.
The sheep horn handle fits comfortably into the hand. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. The spacer is created by taking two sheep horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath built by Eldon.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
