Description: It is no surprise that Mastersmith Shane Taylor won Best Damascus at the 2006 Blade Show with this majestic folder. Blade Show has among the hardest competition of any show for its awards -- with hundreds of makers coming from around the world. This Damascus, with Tragedy masks forged directly into the steel and augmented with meticulous 24k gold inlay, was the clear winner. This knife has been featured in the November 2006 issue of Blade Magazine.
The Damascus for the blade and bolsters combines three separate carbon steels along with pure nickel. This results in a wide mix of tones in the steel that adds to the captivating complexity. Heat bluing nicely highlights the pattern and central masks. By inlaying Victorian scroll corners in 24k gold, Shane immediately draws the eye to his central Damascus images. The blade is perfectly centered and has silky smooth action. It is easily opened using the faceted ruby thumb stud.
The mammoth ivory scales are cream toned with chocolate veins moving across the surface. Screws throughout the handle have been engraved for detail. The backbar has been engraved in geometric patterns -- both on the interior and exterior. The backbar has been textured and heat blued at the tips of the 'feather'. 15N20 liners have been heat blued and textured. The handle fits securely into the hand and allows several grips. Exceptional fit and finish throughout.
This knife was featured on page 36 of the February 2007 issue of Blade Magazine.
