Blade: Percussion and pressure flaked high quality black obsidian
Handle: Mayan bloodwood, American maple, fossil ivory and ebony
Description: This Sterling and Higgins creation features a pressure flaked blade of extremely high quality coal black obsidian. The handle was formed from Mayan bloodwood with walnut edges. The lifecycle of a frog has been inlaid using American maple. On one side, tad poles move from egg to a nearly mature frog. On the reverse, the adult frog is splayed across the handle. Each of the eyes is meticulously created by inlaying fossil ivory and ebony. This traditional netsuke technique results in a very life-like appearance. Walnut display box for a dramatic presentation.
The team of Tom Sterling and JP Higgins is a formidable force. Joe Higgins, who has been flint knapping knives for over 10 years, created the blade of this masterpiece with precision. This skill is matched in the detailed handle created by Tom Sterling, who has brought his attention to detail learned as an internationally known netsuke artist to this piece.
