Description: The Pronghorn Bowie has the styling of Mastersmith Ed Fowler's Pronghorns along with the thicker blade and clip point. After working with Ed for literally hundreds of hours, Elden's work is worthy of the endorsement of his master. On the right side of the blade, Eldon has marked the knife with his maker's mark. On the left, Ed has engraved his maker's mark to show his endorsement of Eldon's work.
Like the knives of Ed Fowler and Bill Burke, each knife that Eldon creates is pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment has been proven to create some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere. This blade features a grain pattern on the surface that is indicative of the forging only in an extremely tight temperature range. The grain pattern on this Bowie is particularly good. This forging method results in a particularly durable and long lasting edge.
The blade was forged from 52100E steel. This is a high carbon, high chrome steel in a very pure form and results in a knife steel that is as good as it gets. The blade is forged at low temperature. It is subjected to a minimum of 30 low temp thermal cycles, which requires a lot of hammer work. The blade was carefully hardened three times using a differential hardening technique developed by Ed Fowler for this steel. Triple tempered to push the steel to the limit, this knife is easy to sharpen, yet holds an exceptional edge
The sheep horn handle fits comfortably into the hand. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. The spacer is created by taking two sheep horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
