Description: Michael Rader was honored as mastersmith June 2010. Over the years, he has gained a reputation for his exquisite woodworking skills, which truly sets him apart from other knifemakers. This slicer was made back when Michael was still an ABS Apprentice. It has been kept in a private collection since it was made and by all appearances Michael could have made it yesterday!
Bladesmith Michael Rader creates an exceptional Japanese influenced Wakizashi. The long, sleek blade was hand forged to shape from 1084 carbon steel. It was meticulous satin finished. A long fuller runs along the length of the blade.
The tsuba is formed from stainless steel and has a crop circle motif that is the hallmark of Michael's work. The handle is formed from curly maple and accented with South American mahogany. Michael's experience as a woodworker is clearly visible in his precision fit and finish. The mahogany has been filed to create a secure grip. A decorative mosaic pin finishes out the handle.
The wooden saya is formed from matching curly maple and also has accents in South American mahogany. The saya has absolutely perfect friction fit and will protect the blade during storage. An exceptional knife with great fit and finish.
This sword was featured in the Oct. 2005 issue of Blade Magazine on page 40.
