Description: The Deputy Marshall Bowie and Spurs Set is among my favorite Bowies to have had the opportunity to display. The large blade is a complex mosaic of patterns and deputy marshal stars. The central stars are visible from a distance, whereas the complex mosaic of patterns in the background are increasingly fascinating with further examination. The spine shows off the result of the accordion technique that was used to reveal the mosaic images and is very pleasing to the eye. Tom describes this as among his most difficult Damascus projects to date. The blade thins slightly as it approaches the clip so as to keep the knife fast in the hand.
The large oval guard is created from matching Damascus that has been heat blued. Because the pure nickel does not react to heat bluing, the deputy marshal stars jump out from a night blue backdrop that mixes deep matt blue from the 1084 and a lighter reflective blue from the 15N20 carbon steel.
Exhibition grade sambar stag scales sit on a full tang that has been textured. Sambar of this quality is virtually unheard of these days. It is a great material that feels very comfortable in the hand and provides a secure hand hold, even when wet. The knife is finished off with a matching heat blued mosaic Damascus pommel.
The spurs are forged from matching mosaic Damascus that had been heat blued. The 'spur' rotates freely and is created from textured and gold toned matching Damascus. The result is exceptional.
All this is presented in a handmade afzelia wood box, the details of which are created from deputy marshal Damascus stars. The box is precision fit to hold the set securely. African blackwood details are used at he corners.
