Description: This deceptively simple batwing folder shows off tremendous skill and ingenuity that I have come to expect from Mastersmith Shane Taylor.
The mosaic Damascus which forms that blade was forged from 4 distinct carbon steels and heat blued. The result is a tremendous color range -- from deep purples to golden hues -- and detail that would not be otherwise possible. An opal provides easy opening of the blade.
The scales are forged from mild steel and were textured on the surface -- a technique that is a hallmark of Shane's work. The sides of the scales have been engraved. The combination of the "primitive" texture and the meticulous scale-like engraving is captivating. The liners are 15N20 carbon steel and have been heat colored to a golden hue. They have been fileworked in a meticulous pattern. The 1084 carbon steel backbar and spine of the blade have both been heat colored and engraved. Shane has engraved his initials on the interior of the spine. Attention has been paid to every detail. Even the screws have been individually heat blued and fileworked. Silky smooth action with a very satisfying click upon engagement.
