Description: Each year, at Blade Show, bladesmiths test to join the ranks of journeymen and masters. Five knives are made by each applicant that are the height of their work at the time. These knives are judged by ABS Mastersmiths on fit and finish, as well as general artistry. Each must be forged to shape from carbon steel. The standards are exacting. With this hunter, John Davis gained the ranks of ABS Journeyman Smith at the 2002 Blade Show.
The blade is distal tapered for a spectacular feel in the hand. The downward arched handle meets up with the palm for a sure grip. The double guard is particularly fascinating, with matching mosaic Damascus layers, one treated with black lacquer, the other mirror polished. The same mosaic pattern is used on the double guard and butt cap. The orientation has been perfectly matched to be a continuous pattern when viewed from the back. As you would expect, the fit and finish is excellent.
