Description: De Wet van Zyl is a bladesmith from Durban, South Africa. He started making knives in 2005 and has been a full time knifemaker since 2007. He spent two years apprenticing with Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey at Heavin Forge in Belfast, Mpumalanga before opening Darkwing Blades in April, 2009. He was named as a Maker to Watch by Blade Magazine and has won numerous awards over the years.
This impressive bowie is made in the style of the famous bowie knife maker Bill Bagwell. Bill was one of the founding members of the American Bladesmith Society and is believed to have been the second modern bladesmith to make pattern welded damascus steel. Bagwell built a reputation not only on his fighting bowies, but also on the knife writing he did for magazines such as Soldier of Fortune and Tactical Knives. He also authored the book: Bowies, Big Knives, and the Best of Battle Blades. His knife combat techniques have been taught as part of the Special Forces training at Ft. Bragg. This knife by van Zyl is an homage to Bagwell's famous Hell's Belle Bowie.
This massive 12-1/2 inch blade is hand forged 52100 carbon steel. 52100 is considered by many knife makers as well as knife users to be among the best (if not the best) steels used in modern knives. It combines exceptional edge holding with durability. A differential heat treatment ensures this bowie will have a keen long-lasting edge with a supportive, softer spine. Because the blade is forged from carbon steels, we recommend camellia oil to avoid rust and oxidation
The coffin handle is hand contoured stabilized curly ash. The copper C-guard is perfectly designed to catch an incoming blade and with a quick move, it allows you to deflect or disarm the incoming attack.
This Hell’s Belle Bowie is accompanied by a hand stitched leather custom sheath. A copper frog reflects copper fitting on the knife.
Exceptional work throughout!
